Smart telescope questions
Do I still look through an eyepiece?
Yes. These are conventional telescopes with optics and an eyepiece, and the app is there to help you find targets. You are still seeing the object directly, not a screen image. The digital part is the guidance, not the view.
What is the difference between the phone-dock models and the WiFi model?
The phone-dock models hold your phone against the tube so its camera can read the sky and the app can guide you. The WiFi model connects the mount to your device wirelessly and uses it as a hand controller. Both rely on the app, but the hardware link is different.
Do the Dobsonians track objects automatically?
No. The Dobsonian models are push-to, meaning you move the base by hand and the app tells you where to point. Once you are on target, the object drifts out of view as the sky rotates. You nudge the scope to follow it.
Will my phone work with the app?
The phone-dock models need a phone that the app supports, since the app uses the camera to match stars. If your device is not compatible, the guidance will not function. The WiFi model also needs a compatible device to run the app and control the mount.
What the app-guided system does
The app handles the star-hopping that normally takes practice, so you spend less time hunting and more time looking. On the Dobsonian models, the app works alongside the manual push-to motion of the base. The result is a scope that still shows you real photons through an eyepiece, but with digital help finding the way.
Tube types and sizes in the lineup
The range covers refractors, Newtonians, and Dobsonians. Refractors come in 80mm and 102mm apertures, the Newtonian is 114mm, and the Dobsonians run from a 150mm tabletop model up to 8, 10, and 12 inch apertures. The tabletop Dobsonian sits on a compact base, while the larger Dobsonians use a full-size rocker box.
How the guidance is built in
On the phone-dock models, a bracket holds your phone against the tube so its camera can see the sky and the app can match stars. The WiFi model skips the dock and talks to the mount directly, which means you use your device as a hand controller. Either way, the electronics are there to point you, not to replace the optics.
What the app does not do
The app guides you to a target, but it does not track the sky for you on the manual Dobsonians, so objects drift as the Earth turns. The WiFi mount can move to targets, but it is still an alt-az design without the long-exposure tracking an equatorial mount gives. And the phone dock depends on your phone working with the app, so an unsupported device leaves you pointing by eye.
