How big a telescope can a child handle?

A 60mm to 80mm short-tube refractor is light enough for most kids to carry and set up. Larger 102mm and 130mm models suit older children who can manage more weight. The mount matters as much as the tube for ease of use.

Should I pick a manual or computerized mount for a kid?

Manual alt-az mounts are ready in seconds and teach aiming by hand. Computerized GoTo heads find objects automatically but need alignment first. Younger kids often do better with manual control.

What can a child see with one of these?

The moon shows craters clearly at low magnification. Jupiter and Saturn are reachable with the included eyepieces. Brighter star clusters and double stars are also within range.

Do these scopes come with a way to take photos?

Several models include a smartphone adapter that holds a phone over the eyepiece. That lets a kid capture the moon or a planet without a separate camera. Not every kit includes one.
