Telescope questions for adult observers

Do I need a computerized mount, or is a manual one enough?

A manual alt-azimuth mount is lighter and quicker to set up, and it works well for the Moon, planets, and bright deep-sky objects. A computerized GoTo mount like the NexStar models adds a hand control and alignment routine, which helps when you want to find fainter targets without star-hopping. The trade-off is more setup steps and a mount that needs power.

What aperture should an adult beginner aim for?

In this range, 60mm to 70mm refractors are the most portable and show lunar craters and the brighter planets. Stepping up to 90mm or 102mm gathers more light and resolves more detail, while the 130mm Newtonian is the largest aperture here. Bigger apertures generally mean a heavier tube and a more involved setup.

Can I use these for photography?

Several kits include a smartphone adapter, which lets you hold a phone over the eyepiece for quick lunar and planetary shots. The refractors with fully-coated glass optics and the Newtonian reflector can all be used this way. Dedicated deep-sky imaging is a different matter and not what these setups are built around.

How portable are these telescopes?

The 60mm and 70mm Travel Scope refractors break down into a backpack and are the easiest to move. The 80mm and 90mm models are still manageable but take more space, and the 102mm and 130mm instruments are best treated as stay-at-home scopes. Tripods are adjustable in height, which helps when you observe seated or standing.

Full-sized refractors and reflectors for grown-up observing

The telescopes here are full-sized instruments meant for adults who want to spend real time at the eyepiece. Refractors like the AstroMaster 90AZ and the 90mm 800mm model use a long tube on an adjustable-height tripod, which puts the eyepiece at a comfortable standing or seated position. Computerized alt-azimuth models such as the NexStar 102SLT and NexStar 130SLT add a hand control and GoTo alignment, so the mount does the finding once you are set up.

Aperture and optical design across the range

Aperture runs from 60mm to 130mm in this slice, with refractors and Newtonian reflectors both represented. The 60mm and 70mm Travel Scope refractors are compact tubes that pack into a backpack, while the 90mm and 102mm refractors and the 130mm Newtonian are larger instruments better suited to a fixed spot in the yard. Fully-coated glass optics appear across the refractors, and the Newtonian uses a reflector design with a computerized mount.

Mounts, tripods, and what comes in the box

Most models sit on an adjustable-height tripod, and the computerized NexStar scopes use a single-arm alt-azimuth mount with a hand control. Manual alt-azimuth mounts appear on the AstroMaster and PowerSeeker-style refractors, where you point the tube by hand and track objects yourself. Several kits include a smartphone adapter and a backpack, which matters if you plan to carry the scope to a darker site rather than keep it by a window.
